For your e-bike, the chain and drive train is the dirtiest part. A dirty chain will not only shorten the service life of your e-bike, but also cause a lot of trouble, such as reducing the working performance, increasing the chain wear rate, and destroying the flexibility of the links. Honestly, cleaning and lubricating the chain sounds like a boring chore. But it's necessary and important to do it regularly because the chain is an integral part of the drivetrain and if it's in good condition, it will improve your riding experience. So please take the time to maintain your e-bike.

Some riders may be wondering how often we should clean our e-bikes. The answer depends on how often you use your bike and the type of terrain you ride. For example, if you only ride your bike on weekends, you can clean it once a month. If you ride your e-bike every day, you should clean it at least once a week. It would be best if you clean your e-bike after every ride.

In addition, when you ride your bike in some harsh conditions, such as rain, muddy terrain or slippery roads, you'd better clean it more frequently as this can cause the chain to rust. What's more, if you hear noisy noises coming from the chain or feel that the chain is clogged or the chain is stretching, you must clean the chain immediately and check your bike thoroughly. When you notice that the chain is in poor condition, it's time for you to get a new chain.

For the items needed to clean and lubricate your bike chain, you should prepare some of the following things: a bucket of water or a hose, a bottle of bike degreaser, a rag, a bottle of chain lubricant, waterproof film, and a suitable place with enough space. Before cleaning your e-bike

There are a few things you should do before cleaning your e-bike. Firstly, check your e-bike's owner's manual for the IP rain protection rating.IP is an acronym for Ingress Protection. It measures how well an item is protected against solids and liquids. The first X indicates protection against solid objects and the second X indicates protection against liquids. The higher the number, the better the protection against solids and liquids. If you find that the second X in the IP rating is lower than 4, for example IP X4, do not use a hose as high water pressure can damage your bike. Next, it's wise to remove the battery. Almost all e-bikes can withstand bad weather, but removing the battery is just a safety precaution to avoid short circuits and other problems. Third, if you have a display in your battery, cover it with a waterproof membrane.

Bodywel e-bikes have a waterproof rating of Ip x 4 and can be ridden in light rain. However, it is not recommended to ride in heavy rain or to hose it down, which can damage the dashboard and battery.

Nonetheless, we don't recommend riding in the rain as it can damage certain parts, even though our bikes have waterproof cables and other waterproof equipment. Even if the battery is removed, there are many electronic devices, such as wires and e-bike motors, that could be damaged in the rain.

Regarding the cleaning and lubrication of the chain, first wipe off the dirt with a wet rag. You should not apply lubricant before cleaning the chain because it will make the chain dirtier. When cleaning the chain, it is important to avoid getting some of the sensitive parts of the bike wet, such as the wheel bearings located in the centre of the wheels, the bottom bracket that connects to the footpegs, the brake pads, and the discs. Simply wipe these parts with a dry rag.

In the second step, drip degreaser on the chain. When dripping the oil, use your other hand to slowly rotate the pedals backwards. Do not apply degreaser to the brake calipers or pads, as degreasers can contaminate these parts and limit their function.

Third, rinse off any residual degreaser with water and wipe the chain with another clean rag for faster drying.

Fourth, once the chain is dry, it's time to apply lubricant. You should turn the pedals in the opposite direction and slowly apply lubricant to each chain. Be careful to apply lube to the chain and avoid applying too much.

Sometimes you may hear lubricant, also known as a lubricant. There are two types of chain lubricants: dry lubricants and wet lubricants. Dry lubricants are recommended for dry weather, while wet lubricants are suitable for wet conditions. Also, do not apply other types of lubricants, such as motorbike or car lubricants, to your e-bike. These lubricants can build up a lot of dirt on the e-bike chain and make it work poorly. Also, you don't have to lubricate the chain every time you clean your e-bike. Finally, use a rag to wipe away any excess lubricant, as excess oil can build up dirt and dust.
